Originally a Bronze Age settlement which became an established Roman-era fort, Peterborough has its cathedral to thank for its present size - it saw a bustling town grow up around its boundaries. After being redeveloped in the 1960s as a new town, Peterborough has flourished into a thriving cultural centre with Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery, Longthorpe Tower and the Nene Valley Railway drawing visitors to the area each year. Situated to the east of Leicester and to the north of Cambridge, Peterborough is connected to London by the A1(M) and by frequent rail services. The towns proximity to Cambridge makes it an ideal base for exploring the surrounding Cambridgeshire and East Anglia regions. Although it does not have the selection of hotels that nearby Leicester and Cambridge have to offer, there are still a large number of accommodation options within Peterborough (and the surrounding rural area) that should be suitable for all budgets.
