As the largest English city in the English-Scottish border territories, Newcastle Upon Tyne has long appreciated its status as an important outpost of English control. Once a Roman establishment, Newcastles position on the River Tyne made it ideal for the export and refining of coal and thus the city developed into an industrial powerhouse. Nowadays Newcastle has a number of interesting sights for visitors to enjoy, including the Tyne Bridge and Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the Angel of the North statue by artist Antony Gormley, and the Castle Keep and Segedunum remains. Newcastle has a busy international airport and is well connected by train and road to London, Edinburgh and Birmingham, amongst others. The A1 and A1(M) travel south towards the capital. Accommodation in Newcastle is generally located around the Quayside area or in the centre of town. Hotels range in price from budget to luxury and should suit the tastes of just about everyone.
