With one of the largest ports in the United Kingdom, Middlesbrough has grown dramatically from its village status two centuries ago to become one of the largest urban areas in the country. The ironworks that developed along the Tees River eventually resulted in the need for better transportation links, leading to the construction of the famous Transporter Bridge. Acklam Hall, the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art and the Middlesbrough Football Club are all popular destinations for tourists. Middlesbrough has several airports nearby, including Teesside, Newcastle and Leeds Bradford. Train connections are generally quite wide-spread, with trains running to York, Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle regularly. Middlesbrough is several miles east of the A1(M) along the A66. There are a number of good quality hotels in Middlesbrough, many of which belong to national chains. Accommodation for those on a tighter budget should also be easy to come by - there are several hostels and back-packer hotels scattered around the surrounding region.
